The aim of the PolyCond project was creating a competitive edge for the European POLYmer processing industry by driving new added-value products with CONDucting polymers.
| This was to be achieved by developing conductive plastic composites that were eco-friendly, cost effective and of high added value. In order to do this, an ambitious multidisciplinary approach was taken, developing new, radically innovative, knowledge-based and sustainable products for protection against the effects of Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) and Electrostatic Discharge (ESD). |
Research was based on the compounding of engineering polymers and Inherently Conductive Polymers (ICPs) with improved conductivity, or hybrid systems of ICPs with conductive nanotubes.
At the beginning of the project, the state of the art research on ICPs was not sufficient to enable adequate replacement of metal components in EMI shielding applications. PolyCond aimed to dramatically extend the then-current performance and processability of ICPs and therefore enable significant replacement of metals in EMI shielding and ESD protection applications.
